Knowledge and Skills
Knowledge and Speciality (Heating, ventilation, air conditioning, fluid dynamics, and thermoelectrics): I have specialised in hydrodynamic and aerodynamic drag reduction in the first year of my PhD. The exciting part was getting inspirations from the dolphin and shark’s low drag swimming abilities, and investigating the possibility of putting them into engineering practices to enhance the energy efficiency. Insights and interests have also been shed on other bionic areas like the “lotus effect” which is able to create functional surfaces with the properties of water-repelling, drag reducing and self cleaning. Now I am focusing on the research of thermoelectric applications which can be used as heat engines and power generators in a wide range from micro-scale applications like electronics to macro-scale applications such as industries. My current effort is being made on developing domestic thermoelectric cogeneration system, which produces electrical power and hot water using solar power and domestic waste heat. Apart from the above, my education background also covers the technologies of solar power, wind power, air/ground source heat pump, heat pipe and biomass. When I was in China, I gained research experiences in developing high speed train (air condition system, air filter, electric heater and duct silencer).
More importantly, apart from the knowledge I gained from different areas in the last few years, the best harvest for me is the development of the methodology which I can use to identify and tackle the different problems. I liked the saying that it is better to teach people how to fish rather than give them fish. But I think it is more important to teach them how to fish sustainably rather than simply teach people how to fish nowadays.
Technical skills
Skilled in renewable and sustainable energy technologies and developing technologies/systems which deliver higher energy efficiency from the aspects of heat transfer and fluid mechanics; Capable of identifying and evaluating the sustainability from the technical details and system level; a good command of Computing Fluid Dynamics, Solidworks and Autocad; basic skills in Photoshop, Flash and website development.
